Why is Joel Anthony here?

What are the Celtics going to do with Joel Anthony?

1. Joel Anthony is a big body center who rarely gets minutes.

2. He's going to be with this team next year for $3.8 million.

3. If he plays, he takes away minutes from the guys you want to develop and he's probably not as good as them anyway. So you can't really play him.

4. He is probably impossible to trade and takes up cap space.

Why don't the Celtics simply release him and let him find a new deal for himself. The Celtics will pay the difference between what he's owed and what another team will give him. Why don't we do that with Keith Bogans? Is there a rule against that? Is a good practice player?
