Green & Rondo Deserve A Chance To Bond

It may seem odd to think of Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green needing time to learn how to play effectively as teammates, but they do. Consider this timeline:

  • The Celtics acquire Green for the last 26 games of the 10-11 regular season for the one teammate Rondo was the closest to at that point in his professional career. Even without the harshness of losing a friend, trying to integrate a new player into a team concept on the fly is not easy.
  • Green is out for the entire 11-12 season because of the need to surgically repair his heart.
  • In 12-13 Green begins his NBA comeback from the heart surgery as well as regaining his "sea legs" in real game action as a contributor off the bench. After 43 games into the season, Rondo is lost to a torn ACL.
  • 2013-14: Rondo misses the first 40 games of the season still recuperating from his knee surgery. With the rest requirements for back-to-backs, Rondo and Green have played a total of 15 games together this year. Under a new coach.

So here we have two players of remarkable talent who over the span of the three and a half years they've been together on the team... haven't really been together on the team. Certainly not both of them at full strength and full familiarity. Assuming no injuries, the 14-15 campaign will be the first where a healthy Rondo and a healthy Green will have the chance to develop and execute their chemistry at full speed.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd kind of like to see it.
