The reason why the Timberwolves are in this situation with Kevin Love is that he is unwilling to re-sign with the team. Reportedly, the T-Wolves covet Klay Thompson. What they fail to realize is that they will be in the same exact position two years from now when Klay Thompson refuses to re-sign with them and chooses to instead become an unrestricted free agent and sign with a destination franchise.
There has been much talk of the Timberwolves wanting NBA ready talent. If this is true, the Wolves are foolish. Given their inability to attract a viable coaching candidate, re-sign their best talent and attract free agents, the best option for the T-Wolves is to build through the draft and control their young talent for more years. If they draft well enough with their own picks, and picks acquired in a Kevin Love trade (like OKC did), they may eventually become a team that players will re-sign with or sign with as free agents. Right now, that is not the case. Any quality players traded to Minnesota are going to be looking to walk ASAP.
