I have shared this previously, and many of the Celtic Fans will remember it first hand, but a story from Larry Bird. In an interview discussing teammates, he mentioned how blessed he had been. He said that he played with Dennis Johnson who was the smartest player he ever had as a teammate, and with two future Hall of Fame front court players. Bird then added in regards to his fifth starting teammate, that "he never knew what Ainge was doing on the court." Now this is essentially tongue in cheek, sarcasm from Bird (probably)- hopefully he enjoyed Ainge. Yet, as the draft approaches, do we not also wonder at times as to what Danny Ainge is doing? I certainly do anyways, along with confidence in Danny Ainge.
I recall Mr. Auerbach saying that Danny was intelligent, possessed a great work ethic, was a family oriented person, and best of all was "lucky." Hopefully, the lucky part will more materialize. Yet to those that bemoaned "tanking," would not the fourth choice before the coin flip with Utah, and Cleveland slipping in, look good to us. I hated to see Pierce and Garnett go to Brooklyn, but do not those picks hold potential. Point being, that once the decision to rebuild was made, great progress has been made. Maybe the team just "settles" for six and seventeen, and plug those players into a young dynamic coach's hand to become a part of a team. Yet when considering our last "Big Three" and that architect, and while wanting "fireworks" I am happily watching the process.
