The powder keg has officially been primed.
Look, I understand the insatiable desire to compete for championships every year, but there is a very good reason instant gratification is labeled as "instant gratification" and is not synonymous with terms such as triumph, success, happiness, or even joy. While there will always be a part of me that really, really wants to see us trade for Kevin Love I understand that, ultimately, maintaining long term success does not come from consuming resources, it comes from efficiently following methodical approaches that incorporate symbiosis. Not in symbiosis in a parasitic sense but in the sense that even the resources we use (draft picks, TPE’s, nonguaranteed contracts, cap space, roster space, and veteran contracts) contribute to our continued success.
The Celtics current roster was almost entirely constructed under the Doc Rivers dogma, and that roster worked wonderfully while Doc was coaching the team. Brad Stevens is now the head coach of the Boston Celtics he brings with him a new offense, a new defense and a new philosophy. I highly doubt anyone (aside from spurs fans) will argue that Tim Ducan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili, are better basketball players than Lebron James, Dewayne Wade, and Chris Bosh, but you don’t need the best players to win a championship you need the players the best fit your coaches philosophy (or else you need a new head coach).
The first infusions of real talent selected, with Stevens’ ideals in mind, arrive in the form of Marcus Smart, and James Young. Stevens is known for having a keen disposition for analytics which is why picking Marcus Smart at 6 shouldn’t come as a surprise. Marcus Smart is ranked as the 2nd best prospect in this year’s draft according to analytics. He’s a defensive stud, almost singled handedly transforming OSU’s offense and defense. There is so much data compiled and compared that it would take me the entire offseason to write a synopsis of it, but for anyone not thrilled about the addition of Marcus Smart here’s 3 links you should check out before you convict Wyc of perjury
Rondo is an outstanding player who just so happens to excel at creating open space for others around him. Even if Smart never becomes a knock down shooter open space is open space if he decides to drive to the rim and draw a foul so be it. Whether or not Smart is a shooter there are few that will deny the fact that he is a scorer and if you ask me points are points. If for whatever reason Ainge and Stevens decide that Smart cannot coexist or should not coexist with Rondo then I trust them to make the right decision as to what is best for the franchise. I love Rondo, in fact, he’s my favorite player currently in the NBA but it’s not a coincidence that he also happens to play for my favorite team. Rondo is a relic of the old guard if Stevens can find a way to maximize his skillset in such a manner that it leads us down the road to victory then that’s one less team need and one step closer to banner 18. In the meantime let's show a little appreciation for the talent we’ve been gifted with for persevering through last season.
