What a real fan wants

Here is what a real fan wants - and it's not necessarily about championships. A real fan wants his (her) team to over-achieve. A real fan wants his team to play hard and get further than anyone expected. A real fan enjoys watching his team because the players win games they weren't supposed to and the coach gets them to out-hustle their opponents. When a team does that, regardless of their abilities, their fans will love them.

I live in Vermont and have no illusions that UVM could ever compete for a national title. A championship for me is when UVM plays well enough to win the America East and gets into the tournament. And it feels like a championship when they can beat one higher seed - like they did when they beat Syracuse.

If this year's Celtics make the playoffs, I'll be very satisfied with that. And if they somehow upset the higher seeded team in the first round - I'd be as happy as if they had won a title. (Well, not that happy, but pretty close.)

A real fan never roots for his team to tank - but to exceed expectations. Go Green!
