3 argument against trading for a Star Player...

Another site published their NBA Power Rankings.

There are two teams that baring injury or self destruction seem anointed to be in the finals.

Cleveland / Golden State

There are two teams that if they catch a good player or someone emerges could compete with them.

LA Clippers / San Antonio

Then there are a bunch of teams that need a lot to go right for them to contend for a championship. All of them have at least two great players.

Boston Al Harford, Isiah Thomas
Memphis Mike Conley Jr. , Marc Gasol
Toronto DeMar DeRozen, Kyle Lowery
Indiana Paul George, Jeff Teague
New York Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis

There are also a bunch of young teams that may be able to do something. The point being--- what the teams at the top have are at least three great players.

Golden State Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson
Cleveland LaBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love
LA Clippers Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin

If you look at this group of ten players

2 were high profile free agent signings- James and Durant
1 came to the team in a non-draft day trade Kevin Love
ALL OF THE REST DRAFTED BY THE TEAM THEY ARE ON.

The Celtics got to a championship trading for two older players who still were paying at an elite level.

Allen, Ray & Garnett, Kevin

There is no Garnett or Allen out there on the market. There is Westbrook, but he will cost a mint and likely will bolt in a year.

Also-- the Celtics were able to get Garnett because they had Al Jefferson to offer in return. At the time Garnett looked like he was developing to a 20/10/10 guy-- Twenty points, Ten Rebounds for Ten years. He was pretty damn close. The Celtics do not have anyone like that on their roster. For several reasons--

The only young big they have Kelly Olynyk looks like a 10/5 guy. Now, he could blow up and become baby Dirk, but he is not close to the value that Jefferson brought in a trade.

The same goes for Marcus Smart-- who may one day become a great payer-- but as of today, not much.

So-- not only is there no one really to trade for (except maybe Westbrook) but the Celtics have no one to trade in return. Oklahoma City is not going to accept Smart, Roizer and Olynyk for Westbrook. NOR SHOULD THEY.

I summery--

Only one team traded for Superstars and had it work out. (Celtics) All of the others drafted their best players.

There are not aging superstars that you can bring in at a discount to trade for.

The Celtics do not have the assets to make the trades they made in 2007.
