Rumor: Glen Davis To The Bobcats?

Is it the 11th hour for Big Baby?

Is it the 11th hour for Big Baby?

Via TrueHoop (Chris Broussard):

The Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats are discussing a trade centered around Glen "Big Baby'' Davis and D.J. Augustin, according to league sources.

The sources cautioned that nothing is imminent, but said the clubs are having discussions.

The Bobcats have been searching for a power forward, and the 6-9 Davis could be their man. The Celtics, meanwhile, have been longing for a backup point guard, and Augustin, who's fallen out of favor with Charlotte coach Larry Brown, would be more than adequate.

A straight-up trade would not work because Davis is a base-year compensation player, so other players would have to be involved to meet the financial requirements. That could be a sticking point in the deal.

While teams don't typically trade big for small, Boston is a bit aggravated with Davis, who's had a few off-the-court problems this season. Most notably, he missed the first 27 games of the season after breaking his thumb in an early morning scuffle with a friend.

We'll post more details as they become available.

Bobcats blogger David Arnott has this to say about Agustin:

I've made my feelings about Augustin pretty clear over the months, and I still believe he can be a solid, young, cost-controlled, point guard for years to come.

However, I'm also pretty sure Larry Brown would rather have Kevin Ollie than D.J. Augustin, and running with Flip or another veteran pickup as the main backup PG might be worth the upgrade in the front court, in his mind. (Acie Law is not anyone's answer.)

Note: David duplicated our poll on Rufus on Fire and Bobcats fans are 46% in favor of the (incomplete) trade rumor as of 8PM EST.

Wrong/Right Way To Write

Doing it Wrong: Gerry Callahan says "Time for Ray to go" but offers no potential deals or even analysis of what the team needs or how it would be upgraded by dealing Ray Allen.

Doing it Right: Paul Flannery looks at a couple of scenarios/rumors and breaks each down in detail.

Which is why Flannery is one of my favorite journalists covering the C's and Gerry is, well, ...not.

"The reason is clear: it is now obvious that the Boston Celtics will not win the 2010 NBA title. And their chances of winning the 2011 NBA title, as presently constituted, are even more remote. In other words, the team is no longer a genuine contender." - Elrod

Doc Gives Insight Into Celtics' Struggles

Doc Rivers recognizes his team is struggling. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Steve Bulpett of the Herald has some terrific quotes from Doc Rivers, who discussed the current state of the team:

"I think when you have a veteran team there's several pitfalls," Rivers said. "One, you're a veteran team. Two, ‘We'll turn it on.' Well, I don't buy into that. I never have.

"Three, leaning back on your past success. Your past success is no guarantee to future success, and I think this team leans back too far on what they've done. And we've got to get to work on what we're going to do."

"We have to get back to work. We have to get back to that workman's mentality. We have to get back to wanting to be the best defensive team in the NBA. We have to get back to executing better.

"We can't just keep relying on guys coming back off of injury. That has thrown us off a little bit because of lack of practice time and all that, but I think that's become an excuse around here. We're not going to allow that. We can't allow that."

"Right now we're the team that's playing poorly. We need to get back to that team that was 23-5. We were playing terrific basketball. We were playing simple basketball, and we were trusting everything. And right now we're not."

At the very least, it's comforting knowing these problems are not being overlooked by the team. Bulpett also mentions how some of the players have been lining up in Doc's office, hoping to address the problems and work on solutions. This is all good stuff, because it proves that this team realizes that it's facing some serious adversity right now, but that it wants to overcome it.

And the first step to recovery, as they say, is admitting that you have a problem.

Also: Add Gerry Callahan to the list of guys who thinks Ray Allen should be traded.

Pierce Questionable

Pierce 'questionable' - Celtics Blog - Boston.com

Celtics' captain Paul Pierce practiced briefly Monday and is "questionable" for the Celtics' visit to New Orleans Wednesday. "Paul didn't do a lot, we actually pulled him out early," Rivers said of Pierce. "He wasn't moving around very well. He's questionable, I think he's going to play but right now we'll wait and see. We have a forced day off because we have to get to New Orleans before the parade."
