NBA Blog Previews: Golden St. Warriors
The Warriors preview comes from an unlikely place, SBN's Thunder blog.
2011-2012 Golden State Warriors Team Preview - Welcome to Loud City
Their biggest strength is one of the most powerfual guard duos in the NBA, functioning almost as Yin and Yang. Monta Ellis is the headstrong scoring guard who gradually learned to love the pass. He plays within his means, and knows when his opponent can't. His tattoos are questionable at best, but Warrior fans love him all the same. Stephen Curry is the main passer though, and he's one of the best shooters in the league.
The downside to having an excellent scoring duo is that if one has an off-night, it's really hard to make up for it. The Warriors were 13-23 when Stephen Curry scored less than 20, and an amazingly bad 3-20 when Monta Ellis scored less than 20. Being hot and cold is natural for a player, but you've got to have some sort of backup for your main guys, and outside of three-happy Dorrell Wright, the Warriors don't have that.
And that wraps up our preview series this year. Hope you enjoyed it. Look for a full set of links to be sent out soon.
NBA Blog Previews: New Jersey Nets
Hey, remember these? New Jersey's preview is up.
Gunnerz!: New Jersey Nets 2011-12 Season Preview
The team’s glaring weakness is its perimeter play. After drafting Providence guard, Marshon Brooks, New Jersey hopes to improve that area. To compound the lack of scoring punch from their wings, the team doesn’t have a solid defender at those positions either. To make any mark in the Eastern conference, they will need a respectable defender to slow down the talent that the top teams employ (Lebron, Wade, Melo, Pierce, Johnson, etc.).
I think their season will simply be a bridge to next year where they are hoping to keep D-Will and take a shot at Dwight.
NBA Blog Previews: Indiana Pacers
The Celtics aren't the only team that needs to fill a lot of holes when the lockout lifts. The Pacers are finally out from under some horrible contracts and are ready to rebuild in earnest.
NBA Blog Previews: Indiana Pacers - Indy Cornrows
The Indiana Pacers team to take the court will look far different than the team that filed out of the United Center after the playoff loss to the Chicago Bulls. Most of the key players from the late season success return, but there will be at least five roster spots to fill and money to spend on players that could accelerate the team's improvement. So while the Pacers have a good, young core of players, the strength currently lies in the flexibility the franchise has right now to improve the roster after the lockout.
NBA Blog Previews: Minnesota Timberwolves
Is Kahn is doing his best Danny Ainge impression (building assets to trade) or does he really think he can follow the Thunder blueprint and build a young contending team from scratch? Nobody knows, but I'm skeptical he can deliver on either one.
Season Preview, 2011-12 Edition - Canis Hoopus
Since being hired as the Wolves' President of Basketball Operations, David Kahn has selected over a quarter of the franchise's first round draft picks while completing a flurry of draft-day trades that has almost completely turned over the McHale/Hoistackcock roster he inherited in 2009. Heading into the 2010-11 season, the Wolves had only 4 returning players from the previous year, which was down (up?) from 5 the season before. Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic are the only two players selected by the previous regime. It is very possible that once the NBA gets back into action, the Wolves will have anywhere from 2-3 new starters and only 1 solid contributor from the bygone era. All of this movement was not without some shape and direction. We have all had our fun with long, athletic and up tempo (especially up tempo defense), but these catchwords were clearly signs along the route that Kahn had chosen for his roster and they almost always (I don't think he had the first clue what he was doing prior to a certain Spanish cash cow landing in his lap) have pointed towards a specific place on the horizon: the Arrival of Ricky.
Good luck with that.
NBA Blog Previews: Cleveland Cavs
Note: That's Baron Davis on the right in the lumberjack outfit. I have no words.
What is Cleveland Cavs basketball without LeBron James? Well, it isn't pretty, but there is some pieces to build on.
2011-12 NBA Blogger Previews: Cleveland Cavaliers | WaitingForNextYear
The Cavaliers actually do have a couple strengths. They are absolutely loaded at Point Guard right now and they have some decent depth at PF as well. At PG, the Cavaliers definitely need to figure out how they want to play this out, but right now they have Kyrie Irving, Baron Davis, Ramon Sessions, and Daniel Gibson. Now, Gibson has been working on transitioning to more of a true SG, but that’s still a work in progress. But in general, the Cavaliers have four guys who can handle the PG job. If there’s an amnesty clause to the CBA, there’s a chance Baron Davis will be the casualty in Cleveland, but for now he is saying the right things about the opportunity to mentor Irving. In a perfect world, Baron Davis would mentor Irving (I can’t believe I just wrote that, but it’s kinda true) for this year and then next year the Cavaliers could use his expiring contract in a trade. That would leave Irving and Sessions as a very capable PG duo. It’s unlikely Sessions would accept that role, though, and one of these PGs will be gone. For right now, though, PG is a strength of the Cavaliers.
What Happens If The Cavs Miss the Whole Season? - Fear The Sword
Apart from the rookies and new pieces that the Cavaliers have added to the roster this offseason, they still have a number of veteran players that the lockout will affect. Will Baron Davis get really really fat without organized workouts? Antawn Jamison and Anthony Parker are both getting up there in years and a lost season would definitely hurt them as they aren't getting any younger.
That's all well and good, but it sounds like they'll be "waiting for next year" for a few years yet.
NBA Blog Preview: Philadelphia 76ers
I hate having to insert "if there is a season" into every article, but it seems more appropriate now than ever. But I started this series despite the lockout and I'm gonna finish it too.
The 2011-12 Philadelphia 76ers Insultingly Fake Preview - Liberty Ballers
In terms of hard strengths and weaknesses, the team is good in the open court with guys like Thad, Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala performing at their best on the run. They've got a consistent three-point threat in Jodie Meeks that is an optimal 6th man on a better team. And between Spencer Hawes, Elton Brand, and Vucevic, there is some semblance of a front court coming together. The problem is, it's not a very talented front court. Marreese Speights is still ambivalent to using brain waves and athleticism simultaneously and Craig Brackins has too many holes in his game to be counted on for anything now or in the future. Have I mentioned mediocre?
NBA Blog Previews: New York Knicks
A P&T 2011-2012 Knicks Season Preview, Should the 2011-2012 Season Happen - Posting and Toasting
...that the Knicks are still, for the most part, an unfamiliar hodgepodge of youngsters and castoff Nuggets. Beginning with Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony and continuing right on down the depth chart, there's a major need for chemistry. That, one would hope, is just a matter of time, but without a natural offseason to mesh, the Knicks could open the season (whenever that is) looking a little disjointed. The team has major strengths, though. Their offense, one of the league's best last season, should only get crisper and more efficient with time to steep as a unit.
