Game Thread | Chat Room

In maybe one of the greatest role reversals in NBA history, this game means more to the Celtics than it does to the Knicks. Kindly, hold your boos until I am done poorly explaining this.

The Knicks have high hopes this season, sure. Realistically they have no chance of even competing for a "they might have a chance" darkhorse spot. IF they make the playoffs, they're a first round exit, and that's a best case scenario. If this NBA season were the movie Bloodsport, the Knicks would be the little monkey guy that gets whooped on after 1 fight.

The Celtics though are in a kind of inexplicable place. They're coming off of the worst regular season they've had since Garnett arrived, and they're also coming off of their second finals appearance in 3 years. So which team are they? That's why tonight matters.

Well, the loss to Cleveland on Wednesday didn't do much to alleviate anyone's fears about the Celtics. That's the truth. Did they get in super-late Wednesday morning? Yes. Did they play on little sleep? Sure. Did they play against a team whose best player was either coming off the bench (Antawn Jamison) or completely sitting the game out (Mo Williams)? Yes.

The Cleveland loss was notthing other than a complete disaster. A truly terrible team, bottom 5 in the league for sure, out hustled and outlasted the Celtics. Embarrassed the boys in green.

Now, you may want to look at that game and say "So, its last year all over again." Well, not exactly. Every team loses games they have no right in losing. The 1986 Celtics lost games to the 26-56 Pacers, or the 29-53 Cavaliers. Losing to a bad team doesn't make you a losing team too. The real test is how you bounce back.

The 2007-2008 Celtics would have seen this upcoming game as an outright declaration of war. Tonight would have been a slaughter. The 2007-2008 Celtics would have drafted a letter in comic sans font telling New York exactly how they were going to beat them silly, then had Nate Robinson deliver the note by hand to Amar'e Stoudemire, while wearing a T-shirt that read "At least David Lee didn't have stupid punctuation in his name", then the Celtics would've beat NY by 40.

The 2009-2010 Celtics would've squeaked out a 3 point win nobody believed, and we would've all gotten on with our nights, feeling a little less secure about the rest of the season.

Who are we going to get tonight? Who knows. Don't let the 6-1 preseason fool you. This team is still very much finding its self, and it may take longer to really figure them out than 3 regular season games. Here's hoping for a blowout.

Match-up Of The Night: Kevin Garnett V 'Amare' Stoudemire

Kevin Garnett has looked good. His FG% has been down, but his defense and his rebounding have both been very good. I fully expect KG's shooting to recover, but the thing that should have us all absolutely giddy is that Kevin Garnett has posted consecutive 10+ rebound games. Last regular season he did that twice. He's already done it once in the first 1 games. The last year KG opened the season with 2 10+ rebound games was 2007-2008.

Now ¿Amare? Stoudemire is a pretty good player. For my money, he's tied with Dirk for the best offensive power forward in basketball. He can score from anywhere on the floor, and while he's lost a little in athleticism, he's still always a danger to hit 40 points in any given night. This will be a fantastic test to see if Kevin Garnett can keep his recent athletic play up.

Three Keys For The Good Guys:

1) Don't Play With Your Food..Play Above It- Old teams tend to be front-runners. For those who don't know, a front-runner is not a guy who liked the Saints last year and the Steelers before that. Front-runner is a horse racing term, and it means the horse will only run as fast as the horses behind him push him. Older teams can be like that, and we saw that last season. We have seen San Antonio do this many times, and we've seen the Lakers do it. The thing about front-runners is that if they don't win the games they're supposed to by a healthy margin, or at all (like against Cleveland or New York), they'll have an even tougher time turning it up against the good squad. The 2007-2008 Celtics were not Front-runners.

2) Get Shaq Involved Early On Offense- Tinafey Mozgov is a pretty darn good rookie. He also nearly fouled out in the first 10 minutes of is NBA career. If we can get Shaq the ball whenever Tinafey is in, then that means more time in the penalty, more hesitation on defense from the Knicks, and everyone gets ice cream after the game. Except Delonte West...he's been bad.

3) Close out on 3 point attempts, don't allow easy buckets, and don't think about the dozens of turnovers you've been committing a game- Turnover have been an issue for the Celtics since KG came to town. Some people have tried to explain it, some harp on it, and point to it as a fatal flaw on the team. But I think, the Celtics should just ignore it. Play that amazing defense. Run your offense. Play physical, get in the other teams' heads. If you throw an errant pass or two, who cares. Nobody will...as long as you're up 30.
