Celtics Lose to Raptors in Ugly Affair

New, comments

What just happened? The Celtics led 101-100 with 12 seconds left, when Leandro Barbosa poked the ball away from Ray Allen. Jose Calderon secured it for Toronto, and the possession resulted in two Amir Johnson free throws, putting Toronto up 102-101 with 2.7 seconds left. Paul Pierce's potential game-winning jumper didn't fall on the other end. Toronto wins it, 102-101.

  • This one was pretty ugly, folks. The officials didn't help matters, for either team.
  • Boston trailed 90-79 with 9:31 left in the fourth before rattling off an 18-4 run, capped off by back-to-back Ray Allen three-pointers from the right wing, giving Boston a 97-94 edge with 3:38 left. The teams traded baskets and free throws, before Glen Davis hit two freebies to put Boston ahead 101-98 with 21 seconds left. Sonny Weems scored a quick layup three seconds later (101-100), and after Ray Allen lost the ball, Paul Pierce was eventually called for a foul on Johnson inside, who buried both free throws to put Toronto ahead for good.
  • Boston led 31-23 after the first quarter, but Toronto scored 38 points in the second frame to assume a 61-58 halftime lead. Offense wasn't an issue for either team in the first half. Toronto shot 52.3 percent, while Boston shot 53.7 percent.
  • For the second straight game Boston struggled from the free throw line (28-38 today), which didn't help its cause.
  • Toronto mustered 40 points in the paint today and shot 39 free throws.
  • Filling in for Rajon Rondo, Nate Robinson dropped 22 points, with 16 of those coming in the first quarter.
  • Shaquille O'Neal caught a few tough breaks with the officials in the fourth quarter. He was called for an offensive foul while rolling to the hoop with 8:23 to play (Reggie Evans just happened to be there), he didn't get the call on the Celtics' next possession when Andrea Bargnani clearly made contact with him while he converted a layup, and then he fouled out on Toronto's next play when Leandro Barbosa stumbled into him.
  • Pierce and Allen both contributed 19 points, Kevin Garnett added 12 points and eight rebouds, and Glen Davis added 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.
  • The Celtics will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:00pm against the Atlanta Hawks.
