Von Wafer's Shot

Von Wafer has bounced around quite a bit in his young career, but he's got a good shot at making this squad and perhaps even finding a productive role on the team.  If I'm reading the quotes and notes right, he's most likely battling for that 15th spot on the roster with Tony Gaffney but has a window of opportunity to impress the coaching staff while Delonte serves out his suspension.

Von Wafer appears on the outside of the top 10 looking in at this point, but Rivers noted with West suspended the first 10 games of the regular season there will be an opportunity to prove himself.

"I think he’s going to be an X-factor type of guy, who can give us a lift,’’ said Pierce.

Last year we had a similar situation where Shelden Williams had a chance to prove himself while Big Baby was healing his hand in the early part of the season.  I predict similar results (flashes of productivity but ultimately becoming injury insurance).

Personally I still like the idea of keeping Gaffney around for a defensive 3 sub, but that's the kind of training camp battle that will bring out the best in both players.  Doc and Danny will just have to make the call based on who fits better.  We're talking about the last spot on the roster after all.  It could very well work out that they are just battling to be the first guy cut or thrown into a trade a few months into the season.  Don't you just love training camp?
