Rick Majerus passed away Saturday at the age of 64. He was one of Doc Rivers' earliest mentors.
Rivers, fighting back tears, briefly attempted to express his grief. “That’s a tough one for me. He’s the one who gave me my name,” Rivers said. “I knew before the game that he wasn’t going to make it through the night. I don’t want to talk much about it.”
Majerus famously bestowed the "Doc" nickname upon Rivers, whose given first name is Glenn, after Rivers showed up to a Marquette summer camp wearing a "Dr. J" Julius Erving T-shirt. Dubbed "Doc," the name has stuck throughout his basketball career.
Sad day for basketball.
