Phoenix Suns hire Celtics' assistant GM Ryan McDonough

After firing Lance Blanks two weeks, the Suns have filled their vacant GM position with now former Celtics' assistant GM Ryan McDonough.

USA TODAY Sports

From the Phoenix press release:

The 33-year-old McDonough is considered one of the game's brightest young minds, who combines a tireless work ethic with an expertise in player evaluation honed over the past 10 years at virtually every level of an NBA franchise's basketball operations.

McDonough joins the Suns after most recently serving the past three seasons as the assistant general manager of the Boston Celtics, where he assisted Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge on all basketball-related matters, while being principally responsible for the draft evaluation of college and international players. He combines the experience of nearly a decade of in-person scouting of prospects across the globe with an understanding of advanced metrics and statistical analysis. During his tenure with the Celtics, Boston made two appearances in the NBA Finals, and claimed the 2008 title.

Also, you need to check out this awesome profile from SBNation's own Paul Flannery:

He's part of a new breed of talent evaluators who have been making inroads into the highest level of the NBA in recent years. His peers include men like Sam Presti in Oklahoma City, Masai Ujiri in Denver and Rob Hennigan in Orlando -- men who have already made the jump to running their own franchises. McDonough may get that chance one day as well. "He's very good at what he does," Celtics coach Doc Rivers says. "He'll be a GM. There's no doubt about that."

From Doc's mouth to Lon Babby's ear apparently. It's great hearing that one of our own is getting a chance to run his own team, but selfishly, all I can think about are trade scenarios between the Suns and Celtics. If he was partly responsible for Boston's moves over the last six years, that means he saw something in our players, right? Ryan, what's it going to take to pry Marcin Gortat from you? Can we have one of the Morris twins? You've got two of them.

Until then, congrats to Ryan McDonough.
