Summer Boredcast - Trade ideas!

Continuing the Boredcast series.

Note: I didn't plan it this way, but it works out perfectly that today is the first day that we can package Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, and/or MarShon Brooks in trades.  (They formerly were restricted to be traded only in individual deals)

LeBron James for Fab Melo, wait...we traded Fab already, so that won't work. Nevermind. I actually think trading Brandon Bass to any team that has interest in him for an expiring contract is the best-case scenario. I don't have a good ESPN Trade Machine link to provide because I think almost any team could use a good, jump shooting power forward that also works hard on defense. Bass is a solid player but there are too many young players that need time on the court to develop.

Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin for Gerald Wallace, Courtney Lee, and Donte Greene

For the Celtics, this is an absolute no-brainer. Omer Asik fills the five hole that's been vacant since Kendrick Perkins was traded two years ago and Jeremy Lin becomes a steady back-up to Rondo. It kills me to include Courtney Lee into the deal. Brandon Bass could be swapped out, but the appeal to Daryl Morey stays the same: DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE. It wins championships, right? With the additions of Gerald Wallace and Lee, it shores up the teams D on the perimeter and gives the Rockets a needed veteran presence. Houston was interested in Crash before he was traded to Brooklyn and he makes a great #3 option next to Dwight Howard and James Harden. Asik is a bit of a redundancy for them now with a need for PT for emerging big men Donatas Montiejunas, Greg Smith, and Terrance Jones and the team played arguably better with Patrick Beverley at the point. Danny might have to sweeten the pot a little with a future first round pick outside of the next three years, but hopefully by then, we'll be well on our way on the rebuild.

I would trade Gerald Wallace for Kendrick Perkins. Perk is just what the Celtics need and Wallace would fit the OKC roster and give them toughness and a veteran leader.

Brandon Bass, Jordan Crawford, Rockets choice of 2014 Nets 1st rounder or 2015 Clippers 1st rounder for Omer Asik

Why the Celtics do this trade: Simple. They get a 27 year old center signed to a reasonable two year deal in exchange for Bass, a useful player who is far more valuable to a contender, Crawford (a salary balancer only), and one of the nine first round picks they have in the next five years. Asik fills a position that the Celtics badly need, and allows Olynyk and Sullinger to develop at their natural power forward positions.

Why the Rockets do it: With Dwight Howard now in Houston the Rockets have a little bit of a conundrum. Asik has already said that he would like to be traded, and with Howard and Asik both being natural centers, Houston would be hard pressed to play both players simultaneously. That leaves Houston GM Daryl Morey in a precarious position of needing to dedicate $28 million to one position on the floor while the team is currently without anything resembling a starting power forward. This deal gives Houston a viable PF in Bass (who is extremely underrated on defense), clears $5 million in 2013-14 salary commitments, and gives the Rockets a late first rounder in the near future. As we saw that season when the Hawks could not find a single team to pony up two first rounders for Josh Smith, first round picks are very valuable in the new NBA landscape. Therefore this deal makes more sense for Houston on the surface than it may seem.

I am really having a hard time at figuring out a good trade, so I'll just do the best I could find. We need a center, so we get Okafor from the Wizards, who is also a large expiring contract, simultaneously getting out of Lee's and Bass' deals. The Wizards are trying to become a playoff team instead of being the laughingstock of the league, so Lee could be a solid backup behind Beal for them and Bass gives them a solid option at the PF position. The problem, though, is that there is no one at C behind Nene (other than ex-Celtic Collins), so maybe Wizards would bail on that deal. Still, I think it makes some sense.

I came up with this trade because early in the summer rumors were out about Aldridge wanting out of Portland. It seems like things are patched up for the moment, but anything can be reopened in the NBA.

I wanted to make this deal realistic as possible. Of course I would love to trade Humphries $12 million, and Crawford's $2 million and change for Aldridge's $14.8 million.

To get talent you have to give up talent sometimes. I had to part ways with Green, and Lee to make this deal happen for Aldridge. Green is on the verge of turning the corner, but Aldridge is a guy that I would like to see paired with Rondo.

Jeff's Take:

The best ideas I had were variations of the above with the Rockets, Blazers, and Wizards. So this is the best idea I've got left.

Humphries, Courtney Lee, and MarShon Brooks and a heavily protected first round pick to the 76ers for Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes.

The Sixers are going all out for tanking and won't mind a step back for future gains. Turner never really worked out but still has potential. Hawes is a fan favorite (and by that I mean they really enjoy expressing how much they don't like him). The Sixers roll the dice on Lee finding himself in a rebuilding situation and they even add some salary to get them up to the salary floor.

The Celtics get a couple of guys that are still young enough to develop and drop even further under the tax line (which might give them room enough to use the Traded Player Exception at the deadline).
