BOSTON – The New York Knicks came to Boston on a 10-game losing streak that appeared to be causing a major fissure toward the top of the roster. Luckily for them, they got to face the Celtics Friday night.

The streak ended 101-95 as Carmelo Anthony went from possibly being out to dropping 21 points in 39 minutes. Jeff Green’s 28 points proved him to be a viable opponent in their battle, but the Celtics’ interior defense hardly made an appearance all night.

It was a game of humiliation for the most part, laughably epitomized by a soft Marcus Thornton layup that got stuck on the rim. But the Celtics made it a competitive finish, getting as close as five points when they went small with Phil Pressey and Rajon Rondo sharing the backcourt.

Their active perimeter pressure forced enough turnovers to get the Celtics within striking distance. But there was just not quite enough time to pull off the comeback in what would have been an ironic role reversal for the NBA’s most fragile front-runners.

Although the Celtics’ bigs must have been inspired by Christian Bale’s performance in Exodus, the Red Sea parted for Tyler Zeller, whose 19 points in just 25 minutes were one of the few reasons the Celtics stayed close enough to strike late in the fourth quarter.

Amare Stoudemire was unstoppable most of the night, going 9-for-16 from the field against Jared Sullinger for the most part. It was one of Sullinger’s worst games in recent memory, as he went scoreless in 21 minutes and reprised the role of Yi Jianlan’s folding chair for Stoudemire.
