BOSTON - Rajon Rondo has been known to be less than garrulous with the media, but when the Celtics visit the Chicago Bulls this Monday, he'll be one of them. CSNNE and the Celtics announced Wednesday that Rondo will be a guest commentator for a quarter during the March 31st second leg of a home-and-home with Chicago.
Coach Brad Stevens expects Rondo's debut as a commentator to be an intriguing experience for both viewers and the recovering All-Star, who is skipping the second game of back-to-backs this season.
"[Celtics broadcaster] Mike [Gorman] actually approached me a couple weeks ago about it and I think it's great," Stevens said. "I think he's gonna do a quarter and a half or something like that. It should be good insight. He knows he can't give up too much insight. We'll go over all the rules in Monday in pretty good detail, but he'll be pretty good, right? I mean people will be really interested in what he has to say."
It's an important and prudent move for Rondo, who is someone that has talents in many areas that will make him successful off the court.
"I think that it's great that he's interested in doing that," said Stevens. "He's a guy that understands the big picture of: right now he's a professional basketball player, but in 10 years, 12 years, he won't be. So what does he do from there? And these are great opportunities for him to grow and maybe find something down the road that he could do. We talked about coaching and we talked about other things. I think it's great when guys start thinking about that and want to participate in things like that."
Rondo will be part of a rotation with several people in the organization, including Danny Ainge and former player and motivational speaker Chris Herren.
BC, Stevens love Waltah!
With Walter McCarty throwing his hat into the vacant Boston College men's basketball head coaching position, Stevens addressed the possibility Wednesday. The praise was in line with McCarty's long-held reputation as a reliable and lovable figure in Boston.
"Speaking in real general terms, I think he's a guy that is a - first of all he's a great person and I think everybody in Boston knows that. And he knows basketball. He's been under all sorts of different styles of basketball and he's just got a great personality that people will be drawn to both in the community and with regard to recruiting and everything else."
Regardless of whether Waltah leaves, Stevens is proud of what his staff has built this season and is first and foremost focused on maintaining the strong chemistry as the team goes through likely changes this offseason.
"Guys, I've got a great staff and it's one of the things that - I've always believed that your team can be affected by team chemistry and staff chemistry. And I think it's really important to do your very best and in our situation, to maintain this level of chemistry because it is very, very good."
DeRozan continues to impress league-wide
The Raptors are in third place in the East in large part due to the transformation of DeMar DeRozan from an erratic scorer to a dominant force. Stevens, being in his first season in the league, has taken note of DeRozan's rapid rise as a major threat in the NBA.
"I've got a little sheet that I make for myself that is kind of my cheat sheet and study sheet as we go throughout the year," said Stevens. "In January, his numbers were really good. And now they're better. That's pretty unusual for a guy having his best year. Usually you start to become more targeted, you fall off, blah, blah, blah.
"And he's just continued to go up. He's shot more threes recently than he has before, he continues to be a good midrange player, and he's dominant on the post. He's a matchup problem for 2's on the post.
"You know, the first time I saw him play this year, I thought, man, he's a lot better than what I hear or (than what his reputation would suggest). I think he's a deserved All-Star, and I don't think that's stopped him from continuing to get better. Which is a good thing too."
