Latvian guard Dairis Bertans invited to Celtics Summer League team

Who?

Christof Koepsel

Apparently the Celtics have invited Latvian shooting guard Dairis Bertans to the Summer League in Orlando.  He's 24, measures out at 6' 4", 187 lbs. and averaged 10.3 points is a Spanish league last year.  That's all I really know about him.

''The ''Celtics'' have been following along my progress in Europe, and have invited me to fight for a roster spot on their team,'' the basketball player said. ''I will be going to Boston on June 29, a few days before the start of the Orlando Summer League, so that I could get some more practice in.''

The Celtics have not yet announced their summer league roster, but it is assumed second-year players Kelly Olynyk, Phil Pressey, Vitor Faverani and Chris Babb, among others, will compete with the team.

Clearly the Celtics are looking under every rock to find talent anywhere they can find it.  They are also taking a hard look at several guys projected to be drafted in the 2nd round.

"Mock drafts are one thing; we try not to be married to those," said Celtics director of player personnel Austin Ainge. "We try to have our own opinions, as does everyone. We also have a history of being very aggressive on draft night. You never know what trades and buying picks, you never know what will happen. Phil Pressey played a lot for us this year and he wasn’t drafted, so we try to be prepared with everyone and it’s not just the 6th and 17th pick we look at."

Personally I'd be a bit surprised if the Celtics didn't either trade for a 2nd rounder or find a way to sign a guy that went undrafted like they did with Pressey last year.
