With the 17th pick in the CelticsBlog community draft, the Milwaukee Bucks select...Trey Lyles.
It was the tightest vote yet; Montrezl Harrell was short one vote behind the former Wildcat. Trey Lyles has drawn interest from lottery teams, so grabbing him this late in the first round can turn out to be a steal. He has potential as a stretch forward, and can develop into a deep threat with practice and coaching. He is simply a smart player with a high upside.
Up next is the Houston Rockets, who received this pick from the Pelicans through the Omer Asik trade. The Rockets had a solid postseason, staging a successful comeback against the Clippers before losing to the Warriors in the Conference Finals. The Rockets don't have many serious needs, but they should look to build a strong bench. Patrick Beverley can never stay healthy, so they may target a potential backup and replacement for the defensive ballhawk.
The three best point guards are off the board (Russell, Mudiay, Payne), and there seems to be a drop off in upside at this point. However, the Rockets are looking for a player to contribute right away. Jerian Grant, Tyus Jones, and Delon Wright are the next ones up. Grant was the core of Notre Dame and was one shot away from going down in history as the guy who knocked off Kentucky. Tyus Jons had a phenomenal March Madness. He won Final Four Most Outstanding Player after leading Duke to a win over Wisconsin in the Championship. Delon Wright is a guard from Utah who could be a valuable ball stopper, like Beverley.
Who would you pick? Would you go with a point guard?
