identity?

When the season began, there had been so many changes to the Celtics' roster, it was hard to know what the team identity was going to be, or if there would even be one. Sixteen games later, is it time to start the conversation? If you think so, here are some not very organized thoughts.

Defensive excellence. Clearly, the Celtics work hard and smart on the defensive end. It's always good to have great defense as the bedrock of a team's identity. For some reason, though, that doesn't really encapsulate what is special about this group. At least, not for me.

Over achievers. Last year, I would have said that was our identity. This year, we still over achieve, but differently, somehow. I don't have that same feeling of a group of guys out to prove their individual and collective doubters wrong. This team is much more focused on fixing the flaws in their play than in proving that those flaws never existed. With the possible exception of Marcus Smart, and given his circumstances, I can cut him a break. Still, IMO he'll be a better player when he stops worrying about making Danny sorry he didn't offer up a plum extension.

Never say die attitude. This is getting closer to the mark, to my way of thinking. That along with 'no excuses'. I don't think I've ever rooted for a team less inclined to fold in the face of adversity. Outstanding.

Dare I say, 'cerebral'? I know that might not even sound like a compliment to some sports fans, but I honestly think it might fit. These guys really seem to think about basketball in a very intellectual way. Not that they aren't passionate, but that they are passionate about, as Brad Stevens is always saying, "playing the right way". Playing the right way certainly includes playing hard, playing with energy, playing with effort. But it also means playing with purpose. That somewhat mysterious purpose. Whatever it is, it's working so far.
