NBA Draft Rumors: Josh Jackson cancels workout with Celtics

Some experts think Josh Jackson could be good enough to go #1, and now Boston won’t have a chance to take a close look at him.

Here’s the report from ESPN’s Jeff Goodman and Marc Spears:

Earlier in the day, John Gambadoro, a Phoenix sports radio host, reported that Josh Jackson had received a promise from a top-3 team. He’s only visited Los Angeles during his pre-draft activities, so all signs pointed to the Lakers as his most likely destination because Jackson has yet to make an official visit with Boston or Philadelphia. That rumor has since been refuted, but with this latest news that he canceled his meeting with the Celtics yesterday, it’s looking more and more like he’s LA-bound.

What does this mean for the Celtics? Some have Jackson ahead of Fultz in their mock drafts and big boards, but Markelle Fultz is still the likely pick at #1 despite a poor shooting day at his two-day visit with the team. It does raise some questions though: why would Jackson not want to prove himself, potentially be the #1 pick, and join a team that was in the Eastern Conference Finals? Boston is pretty deep on the wings and with them courting Gordon Hayward in free agency, Jackson would be slotted deep in the depth chart. In LA, he’d most likely be thrown into the fire as the Lakers’ starting 2-guard and would be playing 30 minutes a night with no pressure.

Or maybe he cancelled his workout in Boston because Ainge already promised him he’d be a Celtic. With the NBA Finals over and all eyes on the draft, we’re going to hear more rumors like this, and GMs will start employing more smoke screens. The NBA Draft is on June 22nd.
