Per a statement released by the Boston Celtics, Jordan Mickey has been released. This was the next logistical move for the Celtics to make before signing Gordon Hayward.
By making the move prior to July 15, the Celtics save $1.47 million, which helps them gain more room under the cap to make the Gordon contract possible. The Avery Bradley trade is already official (his Detroit press conference was last night).
I would imagine the Hayward contract and press conference would happen soon. There have been reports that the press conference would occur back in Boston, and the team is currently still wrapping up their Las Vegas League playoffs. So that might have to wait till early next week.
I would expect to see announcements for Aron Baynes and Guerschon Yabusele signing soon as well as a potential Demetrius Jackson release (if they need to save an additional $650,000 that would become fully guaranteed on July 15).
Mickey elected to skip summer league in order to work out in Houston, so we’ll see if he can catch on elsewhere by training camp.
Per the release:
Originally selected by Boston in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2015 NBA Draft, Mickey averaged 1.4 points (41.1% FG, 54.2% FT), 1.1 rebounds and 4.8 minutes in 41 games (one start) over two seasons with the Celtics.
Mickey also played in 35 games (34 starts) for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA G League over the last two seasons, producing 18.6 points (52.5% FG, 40.4% 3-PT, 74.8% FT), 9.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 3.83 blocked shots in 33.1 minutes.
Update:
The Celtics have announced that Danny Ainge is going to be available to talk to the media today at 1:30 PM to “discuss a major team announcement.” One has to assume this is to announce the Gordon Hayward signing and subsequent transactions, but we don’t know for sure yet.
