Opinions on Celtics Trade Rumors

Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis RumorsThe NBA has been buzzing this offseason with tons of big time free agent signings and trade rumors. Many of these rumors have been circling around the Celtics this offseason. Between Kyrie asking to leave Cleveland, Derrick Rose rumors, and Carmelo Anthony rumors, it's hard not to stay glued to it all.

Now the Celtics did make some big moves already this offseason, and it looks like Danny Ainge is done for the summer at this point. The Tics signed Gordon Hayward, traded for Marcus Morris, and signed the majority of this year's rookies. So it has been a good offseason. We are poised for a strong 2017-18 season, but lets look to the future, and some more rumors circling the Celtics that could potentially make them even stronger.

Kyrie Irving

It was announced Friday afternoon that Kyrie wants out of Cleveland. Earlier last week, Kyrie commented on where the Cavs were, saying we're in "a very peculiar place." It seems as if this comment displayed his unhappiness with the organization and his later decision to want out. Now this is somewhat understandable from Kyrie. I'm not going to say I agree with his decision because I don't. Why wouldn't you want to stay on a team that is contending for a championship every single year? But Kyrie is sick of being the sidekick. He wants to be the guy in a bigger market place. It's rumored he wants to go to San Antonio, Miami, New York, or Minnesota. He could be the main guy in one of these places and run the show.

So how do the Celtics factor in? Well for one, it was reported that the Celtics placed a call to the Cavs engaged in potential trade talks for the superstar. In my opinion, I don't think the Celtics will make this trade, and I don't think that this call means anything at all. If it were to be considered by the Celtics, I'm against it. We would have to give up waaaaayyy too much for Kyrie. The deal would most likely involve Isaiah, Crowder, and next year's Brooklyn pick, and probably more. I think Kyrie is one of the best players in the game, no doubt, but to 1. give up Isaiah Thomas, who is a slight downgrade from Kyrie Irving, and to 2. give away a potential top 5 pick, who could be playing with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown for many years down the road (Michael Porter, Mohamed Bamba, whoever it may be) plus 3. give away picks and or young talent, is just way too much to give.

Trading away Isaiah Thomas I think would hurt the identity of this Celtics team. Just watching Isaiah play his heart out every single game and assimilate right into the winning culture in Boston was so much fun to watch, and it makes you really love him on your team. A gritty team was what the Celtics were last season, getting on the floor for every loose ball, and just competing every game, and Isaiah was strongly tied to this identity and the identity of Boston sports. I don't think you can trade him for Kyrie because of his role in the Celtics' identity, and also because of his skill, and his pure ability to score, which doesn't put make him much of a downgrade to Kyrie.

Kyrie to the Celtics isn't what we need necessarily (or what we want to give up), but Kyrie wanting to leave Cleveland definitely benefits the Celtics in the future. First off, it starts controversy in Cleveland whether he ends up leaving or not. There will definitely be issues within the Cavaliers organization with all of these rumors, and with Lebron. It could turn into a mess real fast in Cleveland. And if he does leave, it gives the Celtics a great opportunity to beat them in the playoffs this year. Yes, they still have Lebron and a pretty solid group around him (Derrick Rose pending), but Kyrie leaves a huge hole for them: an elite offensive player with unbelievable dribbling skills, and one of the best players in the league. The Celtics also improved tremendously this offseason, and have the ability to beat them on their way to the finals next year. The Celtics have what it takes, and Kyrie is only paving them a path to do so.

Anthony Davis

Rumors about the brow and the Celtics have been circling for about a week or so now. The trade would realistically only happen if the Pelicans are not playing well leading up to the trade deadline, and if the front court of Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins is not working out. Anthony Davis is one of those players that gets me excited. He's a guy I would always want on my team. I've liked him throughout his whole career, even in his one year at Kentucky. He can score, he can defend, he's huge, and he's exactly what the Celtics need. It's just a talk of what's it going to cost.

The trade would definitely be a blockbuster. It would require Brooklyn's pick -no doubt- as well as a few more picks, and some of the Celtics young stars. We have assets, and for a guy like Davis, I'm willing to trade those assets. I'd be willing to give up Crowder, Morris, Smart, Yabusele, Zizic, Rozier (love him/would hate to give him up, I think he has big future), and these picks. It could take even more than this (One of Brown/Tatum), but it's Anthony Davis. He fits the Celtics need as a rebounder, but would also be a star on offense. This move would really make the Celtics championship contenders, and I would pull the trigger to get him in green.

That is my take on Celtics trade rumors involving Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. Feel free to leave comments, questions or anything else in the comment section. Should the Celtics go for Irving or Davis? Or is there another blockbuster out there that Ainge should consider? Or should we just stay put with what we have?
