Marcus Smart’s role with the Boston Celtics in 2017-18

Suddenly the team’s longest-tenured player — as well as 20 pounds lighter from the end of last season — Brad Stevens is expected to lean on the fourth-year pro quite heavily this season.

Unless an agreement is met between the Celtics and Smart on a rookie-scale extension before Oct. 16, the fiery guard will become a restricted free agent in the summer of ‘18.

With Avery Bradley in Detroit, Smart will be counted on to check a lot of the top guards in the league on a more regular basis. Plus, with so many new faces in Boston to begin the season, Smart will be counted on to help form a new on-court identity for the Celtics.

Smart has the opportunity to cash in, whenever that may be.
