The Boston Celtics (40-17) host the Cleveland Cavaliers (32-22) at TD Garden for a Sunday matinee match-up, but that is not the biggest story of the day. Paul Pierce, who spent 15 years with the Celtics, is getting his jersey retired tonight, in a post-game celebration on the Garden floor.
Pierce, who was the 2008 NBA Finals MVP, will be celebrated tonight throughout the game in a variety of ways. Pierce has spent his whole weekend in Boston, and was honored last night with a dinner ceremony at Four Seasons Hotel. NBA legends and past teammates spoke about what Pierce has meant to the franchise, both on and off the court.
As for the actual game, this will be the Cavaliers first chance to showcase their new talent that they acquired this past Thursday at the NBA’s trade deadline. Rodney Hood, George Hill, Larry Nance Jr. and Jordan Clarkson will all make their debuts against Boston. Cleveland is coming off a a 123-107 over the Atlanta Hawks. They have struggled this season, due to their lack of defense. With the trade, Cleveland gets younger and more athletic, to help deal with the Celtics.
Boston is 2-2 in its last four games and is coming off a 97-91 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Friday. Victor Oladipo scored 35 points and had 10 rebounds in the win.
After today, the Celtics host the LA Clippers before taking a two-game road trip to Detroit and New York.
