BOSTON - February 11th, 2018 has finally come and passed and there are only two words you can use to describe the night: The Truth.
Paul Pierce was honored by the entire Celtics organization on Sunday with the team retiring his jersey and raising it to the rafters, to go along with all of the other Celtics legends. The night started out with many tribute videos during timeouts, and maybe the most notable one came from Celtics rivals: Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson. The Lakers legends sent their well wishes to Pierce and made it know how proud they were of him.
The night continued on and soon enough, the time had come for the postgame festivities to start. Pierce came out of the players’ tunnel to a roaring ovation from the Garden crowd. Then, the likes of Danny Ainge, Doc Rivers, and Wyc Grousbeck spoke about Pierce, telling stories from his 15-years with the franchise. Following the speeches was, the most important one of them all: Pierce’s. Teary-eyed and emotional, Pierce told stories of growing up and how his dreams of making it to the NBA came true. He talked about winning a championship in Boston and what that means. He thanked everyone: family, friends, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Doc Rivers, and others.
Pierce’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of Celtics fans. His number will never leave the rafters. Pierce can now check off “jersey retired” on his extensive NBA resume. Next up on the list? Springfield, Ma: the Basketball Hall of Fame.
