Aron Baynes returns to bench after third quarter injury

Baynes went down taking contact to the face area on Demar DeRozan’s drive to the rim early in the third.

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers at Boston Celtics Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Aron Baynes appeared to take a shot to the chin early in the third quarter as Demar DeRozan drove into the paint area. Baynes rotated to help, and took a shot to his chin area from DeRozan’s elbow. DeRozan scored with no call.

Baynes quickly dropped to the floor and did not rise, before Celtics’ trainers took him to the locker room immediately.

Despite limited minutes, Baynes stands as a cog in some of Boston’s best lineups this season and ranks first in NBA defensive rating among players who’ve appeared in at least 25 games.

Update:

Baynes returned to the Celts bench with three minutes remaining in the third. Chris Mannix reported he went through concussion protocol and is available to play.
