The Celtics will lose a fan favorite assistant coach after this season to the college ranks.

Jeff Goodman reported Thursday that Boston Celtics assistant coach Walter McCarty is expected to be hired by the University of Evansville as its next head basketball coach.

McCarty, a native of Evansville, Indiana has been an assistant coach for the Celtics since 2013. He also played for the Celtics for eight seasons from 1997-2005, becoming a fan favorite for his hustle on the court and his ability to hit big shots.

The Celtics will lose one of their assistants after this season, but McCarty getting a head coaching job at a Division 1 basketball program is a nice step up for him. But probably nobody will hate to see him go more than Tommy Heinsohn, who made this famous call expressing his affection for McCarty how only Tommy could.
