Report: rumored Kings’ offer sheet to Marcus Smart “not true”

With tension building, another day passes in Marcus Smart’s restricted free agency.

Last night in Vegas couldn’t get more awkward. A large Celtics contingency that included Brad Stevens, Danny Ainge, Jaylen Brown, and Terry Rozier was in Cox Pavilion to catch Boston’s second win in Summer League. At the buzzer, they shuffled off the floor with the team and in walked Marcus Smart with his agent, Happy Walters.

NBC Boston’s A. Sherrod Blakely had reported earlier in the evening that the Sacramento Kings were preparing an offer sheet for the restricted free agent, but that was soon shot down by The Sacramento Bee’s Jason Jones:

To say the least, it was a curious scene in Vegas. Smart and the Celtics seemed to deliberately avoid each other at first, but then there was a playful exchange between Smart and Ainge and Smart later fist-bumped Ainge on his way to give an exclusive interview to The Globe and The Athletic. Stevens also reiterated his want for Smart to return next season, saying “he knows we really want him back. So I know our front office has worked hard to be communicative and we’ll go from there.” On his status with the team, Smart said, “that’s what I want to know. I have no clue. I can only control what I can control.” If you were reading body language in the moment, the relationship between both parties seemed strained, but positive.
