Scal: Celtics Need Marcus Smart to Compete for Championship (video)

CLNS’ Alex Barth sat down for a lengthy discussion with Brian Scalabrine on Tuesday.

BOSTON — As a guy who has been to the top of the mountain in the NBA, Brian Scalabrine knows what it takes to win an NBA title. And when it comes to the 2018-19 Boston Celtics, Scal says it will take having Marcus Smart on the roster to achieve that goal. Speaking to the media at an event for Dr. Robert Leonard on Tuesday, the former Celtic and current NBC Sports Boston analyst told CLNS’ Alex Barth that defeating the Golden State Warriors in a hypothetical championship series would be a tough task even WITH Smart on the roster, and all the tougher without him. “If I’m going up against the Warriors, I want Marcus Smart on my team. You need defensive versatility…you’ve gotta have Marcus on your team.”

Scalabrine also spoke about the return of Gordon Hayward to the Celtics lineup in 2018. Scal praised his passing ability, which will not only help the Celtics spread the floor but allow Kyrie Irving to play more off the ball and embrace his elite shooting ability. Topics also include Scalabrine’s time coaching at Golden State (he saw Steph Curry as being a pocket pass away from being an MVP), his transition from player, to media member, to coach, and back to the media, and his experience playing in Ice Cube’s BIG3 basketball league.
