Celtics waive Rodney Purvis

Celtics execute anticipated roster move.

In efforts to creep closer to the luxury tax line, the Boston Celtics waived Rodney Purvis, a guard who was acquired after a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder last week involving Abdel Nader.

Instead of outright waiving Nader before his contract guarantee date, the Celtics maneuvered this trade which will help them inch closer to dipping below the luxury tax line. Eventually, Boston will be a tax-paying team, but they’ll certainly look to get creative to delay the inevitable one more season. Boston has until the trade deadline to get under the tax line.

Purvis, the 6’4” guard, averaged 6.0 points, 1.1 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 16 games last season with the Orlando Magic. Nader, for Boston, averaged 3.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists last season.
