The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has signed Robert Williams III to a contract. Williams was the #27 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, and he’s scheduled to play with Boston’s Summer League team in Las Vegas starting tomorrow with a matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Williams will wear #44, previously belonging to Celtic legend Brian Scalabrine in addition to general manager Danny Ainge. Williams has had a rough start to his Celtic career so far, but nothing has happened that has come anywhere near a reason to not sign him. Now that he’s signed his contract, Williams cannot be traded for the next 30 days.
Williams averaged 11.1 points and 8.7 rebounds on 59% shooting over two seasons at Texas A&M before being drafted by the Celtics last month. Many eyes will be following Williams through Summer League play after his actions have made headlines before taking the court. If Williams pans out, the Celtics will add another piece to a treasure chest of young assets. This contract is the first step.
