Takeaways from day one of Celtics Training Camp

Listen to what Brad Stevens, Gordon Hayward, and Kyrie Irving had to say on Tuesday night.

Within minutes of the media getting their first look at the inaugural Boston Celtics training camp at the Auerbach Center, we had the treat of getting a glimpse of a healthy Kyrie Irving in action. The team was capping off day one with a scrimmage between, what we assume to be, the starting unit and B.W.A. Irving came down and hit a dagger three with 2.4 seconds left to lift his squad to victory.

Starting with a Kyrie dagger was quite the opening to camp, but here are some more notes from Tuesday night at the Auerbach Center.

  • Robert Williams did not participate in the team’s scrimmage, but is expected to be available in Friday’s preseason opener against the Charlotte Hornets.
  • Irving noted that Brad Stevens had the team working on quite a bit in day one, but added that he’s a “basketball genius”. “Brad did put in a shit ton today, but that’s who he is. He’s a basketball genius, for me. When he’s out there teaching us, you just appreciate it.”
  • Gordon Hayward dunked off of his left foot today, which he was clearly happy about. Even though Hayward normally dunks off his right leg, this was a nice step in the recovery process. Hayward said he felt “really good” today.
  • Watching this team scrimmage was pretty impressive. The players have been saying it repeatedly over the last few weeks, but these runs resemble regular season games. This is not breaking news, but wow, this team is so, so deep.
