Needs going into the trade deadline...

The NBA trade deadline is coming up:3 p.m. ET on Feb. 7th.

The site has been filled with trade ideas-- some more plausible then others. Here are a few high level summaries of what the Celtics may need.

  • A THUG BIG

A month ago, Orlando Magic's Nikola Vučević seemed like the best fit for Boston. As good as Al is-- which is very good, the Celtics looked to need a thug to play in the post other than Baynes. While he likely will make the all-star team, there is a good chance that Terry Rozier and some picks would be enough to bring him to Boston.

The Knicks seem to be willing to move Enes Kanter, but with a 18 million dollar hit-- the Celtics would have to give up Horford, Morris, Irving or Hayward to make space for him. At over 24 million, a far better player Marc Gasol creates the same problem. While Karl-Anthony Towns comes with a minor hit this year-- he signed for 27 million plus over the next four years.

Anthony Davis is the dream-- but there is no way the Celtics can trade for Davis and keep Irving.

There are a few young big playing under their rookie contract who would be a definite plus to the Celtics-- i.e. Myles Turner, Domantas Sabonis and Deandre Ayton NONE of these players are going to be moved.

There are some bigs who are buried deep on the teams bench-Skal Labissiere and Marquese Chriss but the Celtics already have guys like Robert Williams and to a lessor Guerschon Yabusele who fit in the culture have some promise but cant get any minutes.

  • 3 & D Wing

There are plenty of guys out there who can fill this role: Kent Bazemore (18+ million), Wayne Ellington ($6,270,000), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($12,000,000), Terrence Ross ($10,500,000) and Otto Porter ($26,011,913). All of which the response is the Celtics have Tatum, Hayward, Brown, Smart, Morris, Ojeleye and Rozier all of whom can play either shooting guard or small forward.

Avery Bradley would be a good fit but-- only if the Rozier, Irving or Smart were traded.

Can not see any reason to try to add another piece.

  • Back up point guard.

The Celtics have one of the best point guards in the league Kyrie Irving, a legitimate Defensive MVP candidate- Marcus Smart and a guy who lead the team to the ECF Terry Rozier and a pretty decent guy Brad Wanamaker who can not see minutes.

It would be good to just have a guy who would not mind stacking up DNP's but you trusted to be adequate if needed. Yogi Ferrell, (3 million seems a bit pricey for a guy who you do not want to play) Shelvin Mack ($1,512,601)

Dennis Smith, Jr. ($3,819,960) he would have to be acquired in a trade with Terry Rozier going out. The Celtics would have to see him as a ready replacement for Rozier. The advantage Boston has is that with Luka Doncic and no 2019 draft pick, Dallas has very little they can offer in a trade for another big name player. They will have cap room next year-- but if they are serious about winning-- maximizing Smith's value now makes some sense. Although teams like Orlando and Phoenix can maybe offer more to pry him away.

  • THREE POINT SPECIALIST

Davis Bertans ($7,000,000) is one of the best 3 point shooters in the league-- but 7 million seems a lot to pay for a guy who would see about 10 minutes a game.

The Celtics are in a unique situation compared to their recent past. While they are not a flawless team-- they are very close to being able to compete with Golden State. The only way they make a significant step closer is to add another Great player-- Anthony Davis, James Harden, Kevin Durant or Russell Westbrook. NONE of these guys are going to be traded before the deadline-- except Davis and there is no way Davis gets traded to the Celtics.
