Celtics unveil 2019-20 City Edition jerseys

They’re...not turquoise!

via @celtics

Each year, the Boston Celtics get new City Edition jerseys by way of Nike, and for the 2019-20 NBA season, this is what they came up with:

The general consensus appears to be that the colors are fine, but the font is extremely not fine. There have been a range of criticisms – many of them focused on the fact that the main “T” in the center of the jersey looks like a big “C.”

Love to be a fan of the Boscon Celtics.

I can see the thought process behind these. The St. Patrick’s Day green-and-gold uniforms of yesteryear are critically acclaimed and universally loved. Nike and the Celtics most likely partnered up to try to evoke that same love after last year’s City Edition jerseys were on the blander and safer side and the year before that featured the divisive gray Parquet Pride jerseys. The font matters, though. That’s where the big miss is for me, personally. There are a lot of Irish pub jokes to be made (seriously, just scroll up and down Twitter).

We actually got a look at these last month after Enes Kanter leaked them on his Instagram story by way of his iPhone 4. At the very least, we should be thankful that these Celtics jerseys are, you know, green.

Kyrie Irving’s scheduled to make his first return to Boston next week, and it appears that will be when the Celtics debut this new uniform. If we’re trying to make Irving jealous for leaving, I’m not sure this is the way to do it, but that’s just me! Boston will also wear these in Al Horford’s return to Boston with the Philadephia 76ers, their Christmas Day matchup against Toronto, one of their games against the rival Los Angeles Lakers and many more times.

With 16 scheduled appearances this year, if you don’t already love these jerseys, better start getting used to them starting now!
