One of these days maybe Kyrie Irving will say something to the media that won’t be controversial. Every time it seems he has a chance to clear the waters on something he just compounds the problem. It has now gotten to the point where Kyrie can’t even talk to anyone without it becoming a national story.

Adam Kaufman and ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz discuss Irving’s unorthodox leadership abilities on this weeks Celtics Beat.

Is Irving Wrong?

At the crutch of the “Irving is a bad leader” argument is how he treats the younger guys on the team. He called out all of the Celtics young pieces (Tatum, Brown, Rozier being the big three) in an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols. And his point is a good one.

When you have veterans on the team it’s easier for them to buy into that team philosophy. Moreover it’s easier to get veterans to sacrifice shots, assists, other stats for the greater good. It’s harder to sacrifice when you’re on a rookie contract playing for that next contract. You know who has a little experience doing this? Irving.

And that’s what makes a lot of this so frustrating. You would think Irving would have a better grasp at being the “Anti-LeBron” when it comes to leadership. But despite his past, Kyrie still has problems propping up his teammates when the time truly calls for it.

Make no mistake about it: This is what Kyrie wanted. This is why Kyrie is in Boston instead of Cleveland. He wanted to lead his own team. He wanted to be the face of a franchise. Irving has that now. Good leaders adjust when they need to, pivot when they know something’s not going right. It’s time for Kyrie to realize that change.
