Well, it’s not exactly a first time announcement between Ainge, the franchise, and its future franchise player, but fans that might have had some doubts because of rumored cold feet and outside suitors can rest assured that the wedding is still on for July 1st.
During the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, there was a lot of noise surround Irving and his impending free agency. Despite making a verbal commitment to the team, the media had been hounding him about his October proposal. It wasn’t enough that Kyrie on bended knee even used the words “if you guys will have me” in front of the Celtics and all its best friends (season ticket holders). But over the last few weeks, the Knicks broke up with their girlfriend (trading Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas) and Irving admitted to calling his ex (LeBron James) on the phone.
To be honest, using this wedding theme perfectly illustrates how silly this silly season has been and why Irving’s frustration bubbled over last week in New York. There are six months between now and free agency. There’s a regular season to be played out, a playoff run to go on, and hopefully, a trip to The Finals in the future. So much can change between now and a July 1st wedding, but what we have is Kyrie’s word and a franchise willing to take him at it.
For now, let’s check out their wedding registry. Who’s springing for the max contract? Anybody know if they want an espresso machine or a generational big man perhaps?
