Per sources, Celtics forward Semi Ojeleye's contract for next season is being guaranteed. No surprise there.— Adam Himmelsbach (@AdamHimmelsbach) June 27, 2019
Ojeleye has a team option for 2019-20 worth $1,618,520 and another team option for the 2020-21 season worth $1,752,950. These figures are so low for the value that Ojeleye provides that it makes incredible sense for the team to pick up his option for next year.
Semi Ojeleye averaged a career-high 3.3 points to go with 1.5 rebounds and 0.4 assists while shooting 42% from the field, 31.5% from behind the 3-point line and 61.5% from the free-throw line. He appeared in 56 games for the Celtics last season, and he even started 3 of them. Ojeleye is known as the “Giannis Antetokoumpo slower downer,” so for that reason alone, he’s worth the extremely cheap team option among everything else he brings to the table.
Although his contract is guaranteed for next year, that’s no guarantee Ojeleye will suit up next year for Boston. For a team trying to manipulate the salary cap as much as possible to brace for the potential losses of Kyrie Irving and Al Horford (and potentially bracing for the arrival of Kemba Walker), the Celtics will pinch every penny and explore every avenue to maximize talent next season.
Also reported by the Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach is that Ojeleye will not play in the Las Vegas Summer League while Guerschon Yabusele is.
