The Boston Celtics have waived forward Amile Jefferson. Jefferson was signed in early-December to give the Celtics some additional depth up front, while other big men worked their way back from injuries. Boston took it easy with Daniel Theis following offseason knee surgery, and Tristan Thompson has been recovering from a strained hamstring suffered before training camp.

Jefferson played in one of the Celtics two preseason games. He logged four minutes against the Brooklyn Nets and grabbed one rebound, while committing a foul and turning the ball over once.

In a normal season, Boston would have invited up to at least three players to training camp. These moves are usually made to gain Affiliate Player rights for the players for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA G-League.

To this point, it’s unclear if the Celtics will operate the Red Claws this season or not. The status of the entire G-League remains up in the air. There have been reports that the NBA will run a bubble for the G-League that will consist of several regular season games, followed by a tournament. Neither the NBA, nor the G-League have confirmed those reports.

With Jefferson’s waiver, Boston’s roster now stands at the regular season maximum of 15 standard contracts and two Two-Way contracts. The 2020-21 Celtics are:

· Jaylen Brown

· Carsen Edwards

· Tacko Fall (Two-Way)

· Javonte Green

· Romeo Langford

· Aaron Nesmith

· Semi Ojeleye

· Payton Pritchard

· Marcus Smart

· Jayson Tatum

· Jeff Teague

· Daniel Theis

· Tristan Thompson

· Kemba Walker

· Tremont Waters (Two-Way)

· Grant Williams

· Robert Williams III

All but Green are on are on fully guaranteed contracts. Green’s contract will become fully guaranteed on the league-wide guarantee date of February 27.

For the 2020-21 season, the NBA has amended the rules for Two-Way players. This season, Two-Way players will be able to be active for a maximum of 50 regular season games. This is a change from prior seasons, when Two-Way players were limited to 45 days (inclusive of games and practices) with the NBA team per season.

The Celtics open the 2020-21 season on Wednesday, December 23 vs the Milwaukee Bucks.
