Basketball discussions over the past two plus months have looked back in history rather than the now. As the play-by-play man of the Celtics for the last 39 years, Mike Gorman has been voice of the present. Alongside Tommy Heinsohn, they’ve been the soundtrack to some of our favorite basketball memories. CelticsPod caught up with the Boston legend to discuss:

  • how Mike has stayed safe during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • what it’s like working with the incomparable Tommy Heinsohn

“Tommy’s a piece of work, and I could go on for a long time on Tommy. All favorable too, mostly.”

  • smoking on the gondola in the old Garden
  • how Mike and Tommy first met
  • life on the road with the Celtics media team
  • why Marcus Smart is Mike’s favorite player

“My favorite player on the current roster is Marcus, and he has been for a couple of years now. I love his game (Marcus Smart), I love the way he plays the game, I love the intensity he has.”

  • wow a team judges play-by-play announcers ability
  • the process Mike went through to get to where he currently is
  • Tommy’s sideline eating habits

“Sometimes he (Tommy) will lose focus for a short period of time, usually while he’s eating, which he does constantly through the broadcast, which is always kind of funny.”
