Per the Celtics injury report, Jeff Teague is officially out today against the Toronto Raptors with a sprained left ankle. Teague suffered the injury in the middle of the fourth quarter back peddling on a Derrick Rose drive and kick out to Sekou Doumbouya for three:
It’s unknown how severe the sprain is or how long Teague will be out, but with eight games over the next two weeks, the compressed schedule is unrelenting and someone off the bench will have a big opportunity to fill those minutes.
Payton Pritchard has already established himself as a key member of the second unit, averaging 22 minutes per game as a rookie and already more than Teague (20.6 mpg).
One option could be an increased role for Semi Ojeleye. In yesterday’s win in Detroit, he seemingly supplanted Grant Williams in the depth chart and played 22 minutes as a 3&D wing (3-for-6 from behind the arc). Aaron Nesmith is still struggling to pick up defensive rotations, but it’s possible that he could be a candidate for non-Gino Time minutes.
Brad Stevens could also turn to his stable of undersized point and combo guards. Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters have cameoed in garbage minutes so far, but with Kemba Walker out, the Celtics are starved for ball handling playmakers. The second rounders have showed out for the Maine Red Claws in the G-League, but neither have consistently done it at the NBA level.
Marcus Smart is listed as questionable.
