My coaching conversation with the two J's

Good morning Jaylen, Jayson How are you doing? Thanks for stopping in for this chat.

I want to start by saying that I think you are both incredible young men and I am privileged to be your coach. I am not the GM but I hope you both retire as Celtics with multiple Larry O'Brien Trophies and your numbers raised to the rafters. I say this because you two are the leaders of this team. You know that, right? I know, I know, Marcus likes to think of himself as the leader and god bless his effort and hustle and the way he wears his passion on his sleeve. Let's face it, he's an important part of this team but he's not the leader. You guys are the leaders.

I assume you know you are the leader but I want to check in with both of you. Are you okay with it? I mean are you ready to embrace it? I mean really embrace it? Are you ready to take on that role? I hope so, because this team needs you both to embrace leadership.

You are both passionate about winning. But you both have quiet and humble personalities who are not naturally demonstrative with your feelings. I understand. I respect that but I want you to change. This team needs you to turn up the volume. The rest of the team needs to see your passion. They need to feel your passion as much as you do.

How do you do this? High-five your teammates. Exhort them. Take charge with your voice. Challenge the opponent. Get mad at your teammate when they screw up. Let your teammates know that they can rely on you and that you trust them to play at their very best. Lead by example and never accept complacency, and never be okay with losing.

Please think about what I just said. Please take on the mantle of leadership. Accept the challenge.
